Tour Details

Brush up on your Naples's history from a new vantage point - underground. This II Tunnel Borbonico tour will take you through a historic underground tunnel that has seen its role change throughout its history. As you navigate this tunnel with your guide, you'll find out about the many battles this site has withstood, including the many epic fights of World War II.

Your Il Tunnel Borbonico Tunnel museum tour begins at Vico del Grottone 4, one of the tunnel's two entrances. From there, you'll embark on a trip back through time, starting in 1854. That year, King Ferdinand II of Bourbon commissioned an architect to build this spacious tunnel as an escape route from his dwelling. It was never finished; two years later, the Bourbon dynasty fell. What remained was used as an air-raid shelter during World War II and opened to the public in 2010.

Artifacts abound on your path through the tunnel. This underground passage was also used as a municipal deposit, meaning that it was a place where wartime rubble and trash were collected. As a result, you'll find all sorts of items throughout the passage; vintage cars, refrigerators, and an old monument of Aurelio Padovania, a fascist trade unionist. The entire Bourbon Tunnel museum tour lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. Check out this Bourbon Tunnel tour to travel back in time and take a peek at this storied underground wonder in Naples.
